Cook Shire, Torres Shire and Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire – Development assessment services

Since 2007 Reel Planning has provided development assessment and strategic planning services to Cook Shire Council. Our relationship with Cook Shire Council, combined with our extensive experience throughout rural Queensland, has provided us with the opportunity to extend our services to Torres Shire and Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire. We have developed a solid reputation on regional planning issues and finding solutions that enable local governments to be responsive to the needs of their communities.

Planning Schemes: Gympie, Cook Shire and South Burnett Regional Council

Reel Planning has prepared the new Planning Scheme for Gympie Regional Council, which has been adopted and is now in effect. The Planning Scheme has successfully dealt with Council amalgamations and changing legislation, with a significant reduction in red-tape for the Council. We are pleased to announce that for our work on the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme, Reel Planning received a Certificate of Commendation from the Planning Institute of Australia.

We have also been engaged to prepare new Planning Schemes for Cook Shire Council and South Burnett Council, for which drafting has substantially progressed. These projects have provided us with a detailed knowledge of the issues important to rural and regional Queensland, as well as the statutory processes, State-interests and key players in the plan making process.

Eastern Kuku Yalanji Local Plan

The preparation of new Planning Schemes in far north Queensland was seen as a good opportunity to recognise the land use aspirations of Traditional Owners who have recently secured Aboriginal Freehold over their lands. Reel Planning worked closely with the Wet Tropics Management Authority, Jabilbina Yalanji Aboriginal Land Corporation, State-government agencies and Cook Shire Council, to ensure new Planning Schemes recognised the use rights afforded to Traditional Owners. The Eastern Kuku Yalanji Local Plan will form part of the new Cook Shire Planning Scheme and identifies precincts of ‘Good Living Areas’ where pockets of development will occur.

Emerald Structure Plan

We provide detailed strategic analysis for private stakeholders wishing to have a say in long-term plans for their community. The Emerald Structure Plan was one such project. Reel Planning was engaged by a consortium of key landowners in Emerald wanting to undertake a comprehensive review of the draft Strategic Framework prepared by the Central Highlands Regional Council. Our role involved coordinating a team of specialist consultants to review the Council’s forward plan for growth and, where possible, put forward a more viable growth alternative having regard to need, infrastructure, flooding and agricultural land resources. The result was a Structure Plan for a more sustainable growth pattern for Emerald which was provided to Council as a submission to the new Planning Scheme.
